 Sensei
Gichin FUNAKOSHI | Sensei Gichin
FUNAKOSHI is considered as the founder of modern karate. Born in Shuri,
Okinawa Prefecture, in 1868, he started practising karate-do at a very early age. He
was the first to promote this martial art and was chosen to represent karate-do
at the first national athletics meeting in Tokyo in 1922. Though by then more
than 50 years old, Sensei FUNAKOSHI saw his life transformed by this event. He
moved to Tokyo where he started developing karate, first for Japan, later for
the other countries as well. Before passing away in 1957, he taught many pupils,
one of whom was Sensei Tsutomu OHSHIMA. | | |
