Mr Bernard Cherix, who passed away in Sion
on December 17, 2009, at the age of 82, was the pioneer
of Karate in Switzerland. He introduced the art in
1957.
Under the guidance of various experts, he began with
wrestling, judo, aikido and Ju-jitsu before discovering
Karate in Paris.
Combining various techniques, he created a self-defense
method amazingly effective. The principles are fully
illustrated in his book "Karate and Self- defense"
published in 2008. He practiced his art until the
end of his life.
For years he ensured the development of karate in
our country holding the positions of technical director,
trainer and national coach. Thorough the years his
influence grew and from 1965 until 1976 he held the
position of Vice-President of the European Karate
Union.
In 1966 he met Master Tsutomu OHSHIMA. This encounter
completely changed totally his approach and understanding
of Karate.
Founding member of the European Karate Union, founding
member and honorary president of the Swiss Karate
Federation, he was also founding member and honorary
president of Swiss Shotokan Karate, association under
the direct authority of Master Tsutomu Ohshima.
